[CD] Rising Above is Plaid On Flannel’s first EP, released in 2016. The 6-song record was the first Plaid On Flannel music to feature musicians outside of singer-songwriter Nolan Randall. And it established Plaid On Flannel as an alternative indie blues rock band in Toronto’s music scene. 5 of the 6 tunes on Rising Above were previously recorded on earlier albums. All songs except the title track.
The 26-minute extended play offers a unique sound rooted in blues rock. Driven by the interplay between the lead vocals/guitars of Nolan Randall and the backing vocals/keyboards of Jen Doyon. While being guided by the tight and nuanced rhythm section of Les Cassling and Minas Hatzigiannatzoglou.
When it comes to sub genres in rock, Rising Above derives a number of different elements throughout the EP. From the alternative funk of “Maybe” to the neo-psychedelia of “What’s Real”. Along with catchy and groovy tunes like “Go The Distance” and “Feeling No Regrets” that sound like they should be on rock radio.
